La nuova Superbike - 5- Il nuovo motore Testastretta Evoluzione

Wednesday 08 November 2006 19:15:54 by Federico Minoli

The 1098 engine is immediately recognisable by its completely new compact cylinders and cylinder heads. Other 1098 innovations and revisions are less obvious as they reside inside the Evoluzione’s engine cases, but whether external or internal, every new development was conceived to create a lighter, more efficient, more powerful and ultra-compact engine.

-English version below-

The 1098 capacity is a result of a new highly ‘over-square’ design with a 104mm bore and a relatively short 64.7mm stroke. The cylinder heads have been completely redesigned and, when combined with advanced MotoGP induction technology, enable even the standard specification 1098 to produce more power than the previous extreme Testastretta ‘R’ engine.

The Evoluzione features racing size ‘R’ valves (42mm inlet, 34mm exhaust), operated by radical ‘R’-derived camshafts. The new cylinder heads also benefit from fewer components and include magnesium covers to achieve a staggering weight saving of over 3kg (6.5lbs).

With a 30% increase in air flow over conventional throttle bodies and the new elliptical shape contributes an incredible 5hp increase to the record-breaking motor, 1098 owners will be the first to feel the power of this MotoGP technology on the road.

The Testastretta Evoluzione is the lightest Ducati Superbike engine ever, thanks to close scrutiny of every engine component. A total of 5kg (11.1lbs) has been saved by reducing the weight of many components, including transmission gears and the gear selector drum as well as the oil pump and primary gears.

The motor looks so small for the extra power. Your engineers have earnt their money. Basic motor design looks less complicated, Does the motor transmit more mechanical noise? This bike will reset the standard for motorcycle design.

NO! Tonydesmo - Puro Ducatista 100% - Made in Italy

Dear all,
I have a dump question. What does “the new elliptical shape” mean? Is it the combustion chamber?
I’m arguing with a friend about translation.

New innovations inside the engine?
do they still hamer the ballbearings on the crankshaft, or is this innovated as well and you use hydraulic presses?
This because many of our beloved engines have suffered damage due to this stoneage hammering on escential ballbearings…
Please show us some pictures online how you build up the new engines, or do things remain as in the old times, and is it adviceable to strip the bike once in your possesion. and re-do everything they should do in borgo panigale ( thread tapping with the smooth#3 tap, removeing welding spatters, shim out the crankshaft in it’s casings, remove the miss treated ball bearings and gentily push on new ones, fix the old and beloved sidestand lift spring (a live safer!!) just to name but a few defects that throug the years of loving and working with ducati bikes have come out.
All the new bikes have a good design and caracter, but how about putting some quality in as well?
Not just expencive quality parts, but actualy controlling how the bikes are build and brain storming about how to improve….
when the old (early 80’s) supersports grew to 1100cc the quality went down so much that the whole brand(ducati) nearly died… DO NOT let this happen again.

P.S. Nevermind the stainless steel breaking studbolds that have ruined many 1995 supersports, i will replace them straith by aircraft certified Titanium studbolds..
or the electrical rectifiers that start to burn under your fuel tank…
It is okay to pay heaps of money for a ducati, but if you have to leave it burning on the highway after you escaped with your live, you will be thinking twice about buying something italian…
Remember QUALITY is what we want, not a burning wreck of expencive and lightweight metals..

Excuse me,Johnny, why do you identify all the italian production with Ducati?Do you know MV AGUSTA,Benelli,Morini,Laverda,Cagiva?

43. Posted Tuesday 21 November 2006 at 08:39:31 by Ciccio

Having ridden a 900ss for 5 years, a 996 for 7 years and now a 999 for about 12 months, why oh why have you not got a decent sized petrol tank i.e. 18 litres on the 1098. I usually do 2-3,000 miles in Europe every year and in France on Sunday there are very few petrol stations. The warning light comes on after 120 miles - this is not enough!!! Cheers Tony

REPLY to Coasma.
Yes, i know all the other italian brands. even have many kilometers on a freccia C10 with performance kit, before being able to buy the ever loved ducati.
as i own also some italian cars i can say that Quality is not an italian word, Styl and Design not to mention Cuore is what sells the italian bikes.
Never mention the once great MV (moto Varese) that became Cagiva, but if you buy a new MV and go loking for some parts to race the bike you find out what destoyed the italian bike market. Spares and tuning parts are essential to have a good product. My love for Italian bikes, cofee machines and the style of the italian cars will Never die, but for those who seek perfection there cannot be rest at this side of the grave !

But again i can see many stainless steel bolts on the new 1098 engine, apperently the compagny does not care that if you break down due to some stupid rust free snaped bolts, your day is ruined…
also the stainless expants different than aluminium so the thread made into the already unreliable aluminium needs to be fixed with some helicoil repairs. i just want to see how all this is handled on my new Hypermotard
