AMA next year

Tuesday 22 August 2006 12:58:25 by Federico Minoli

Today we made the decision that we will not race with the AMA next year. This was a very hard decision for us, but one that I think makes some sense and one that I support in the short term.

-Versione italiana in fondo-

Basically, when we set up the American team in the winter of 2003 and early 2004, we had it as a three year program. With all contracts up for renewal this year, we looked at our commercial plan and product range, and decided that we had accomplished what we wanted to in the short term.

With things being unsettled for 2007, we thought we could regroup and step back, in order to try to put together a program that allow us to come out swinging and put us back on the AMA podium and in the winners circle in 2008.
I know that this was a tough and controversial call, but as with all things in racing, we had to make a change after a few seasons. I personally want to thank Terry Gregorica, Parts Unlimited, all the team members, the AMA, and everyone else involved in making this happen over the past three years.

The business in North America is doing very well, and overall the future looks good. We are still a very small company when compared to the other, larger Japanese manufactures, and we can only afford to do so much.
The AMA championship is the premier series in the USA, and with the importance of the American Sportbike market (the largest in the world), you can rest assured that we will make every effort to return to the fold in 2008.

So, what are those “unrestfull” factors in AMA superbikes?

3. Posted Tuesday 22 August 2006 at 16:51:53 by Aigor

@ # 2
Probably those factors have to be seek into the differences beetween WSBK and AMA technical regulaments that force Ducati Corse to split its human and economical resources in two different paths of development of the bike.
Moreover also the possibility, in the future to introduce a new bike more performant due to the new motor of 1098cc instead of the extremly expensive traction control absolutely necessary nowadays to battle with 999 against four cylinders competitors.

I understand the need for profit, but isn’t the cost of MotoGP much more extreme than AMA? Would a better strategy be to drop MotoGP to concentrate on 1)Racing and winning with the Superbikes in WSBK and national series and 2)developing the SBK series as a legitimate choice for privateers around the world? Personally, I’d enjoy seeing lots of 999 and 749 in paddocks than the desmosedici only on TV and in photos.

What a sad development. From what I’ve read on the subject I can (kind of) see the necessity for Ducati to pull out of AMA as a monetarily driven business decision. From the lack of results and the restrictive AMA rules aspect I must take exception. Heck, everybody wants to win but I don’t see Honda making much of a dent in the Yosh armor either. Granted, the AMA rules must change to create a more level playing field but I think I speak for a lot of the US Ducati faithful in that we are extremely proud of Ducati Corse and our riders, Neil and Ben, for the maximum effort they put forth every week in the AMA series. Sure it’d be nice to see them finish 1 and 2 on the podium every week but that not being possible at this time it’s just as exciting to watch them ride their machines on the ragged edge and fight for position whether it be for 3rd, 6th or 10th. It’s the Ducati presence that really means the most. How boring it’s going to be to listen to all the 4 cylinder machines run around the track without the bellowing desmo twin music that right now, seems to overpower half the field. To tell you the truth I have no reason to go to an AMA race next year (unless someone decides to run a 999R in a privateer type effort) and I doubt I’ll be watching much of the series on TV. Hopefully AMA will realize I’m not alone and make appropriate and intelligent rule changes to bring the excitement back. We want you back in 2008 Ducati.

From an european point of view it is difficult to accept the many and often short noticed changes of rules.

BSB (British Superbike) and WSBK are currently trying to define a common set of rules, which might apply to all national European series and to WSBK. I think, this gives a small company like Ducati a true chance to be present in many competition series. Why wouldn’t AMA join this common set of rules?

8. Posted Tuesday 22 August 2006 at 21:03:07 by Antonio 888

Federico, bentornato !!! Ci sei mancato.

9. Posted Tuesday 22 August 2006 at 21:54:44 by M!rKo

Mi piace Neil, è aggressivo e veloce, e merita grandi risultati.

#4, MotoGP is the F1 of motorcycles. No way they should walk away from that. Better to be the best at the greatest show on earth and spend more than to be best at the horrible circus that is AMA Racing (currently).

I applaud Ducati for making the difficult choice and doing what’s best for the business. Ducati may have benefited from participating in the AMA SBK series, but it’s nothing in comparison to those manufacturers that are winning consistently every weekend.

Now…On to MotoGP domination! Viva Ducati!

I understand the financial issues however this will be a double edged sword. Aprilia never understood why they couldn’t crack the American market…simple no racing. Italian riders, bikes, and cars in general mean racing to most Americans…Ducati pulling out of the AMA series is a disaster for Ducati and bike racing in the U.S. It will most assuredly negativly impact AMA racing and Ducati sales.

Good Luck!

I applaud the decision. If the AMA wishes to lose entrants, fees AND spectators, so be it. Congratulations on taking the AMA to task.

I guess its been a hard decision but Ducati as a business is out to make profit not history and as such the decision had to be made, in the same way that Ducati withdrew from the Australian Superbike Series here a few years agao when the exposure of that series no longer justified the expense. At present the Desmosedici with Loris aboard is the bike to beat in MotoGP and as this series is the highest level of motorcycle racing I think its important for Ducati to stay in that category. With the risk of the new rules for WSBK changing to real in the twins is there any possibility of Ducati building enough Desmosedici’s to race in superbike competition that would surely be the answer to th twins no longer being competitive.

Desmo Saluti a tutti.

it’s going to be sad to see ducati go from AMA next year. i’ve loved watching ben and neil mix it up with all the japanese bikes out there.

22. Posted Monday 04 September 2006 at 04:21:15 by DONALDDUC

As much as it brakes my heart to say it , I’m glad ! The AMA series is the worst PR Ducati could ever ask for. With out going into all the bogus rules and regs’ the AMA has it’s not the stage that Ducati can showcase the racing dominance it is known for. The U.S. is sleeping with the Japanese and China (just walk through Wal-Mart) so why not help boost there motorcycle sales…enter the AMA.

I just wish Ducati luck in their efforts in the displacement rule change battle. I hope with this new bike announcement in November and the rule changes that you really take advantage of these and make serious step towards the future of Ducati. Love the bike love the company, however, I do have my worries. Best of luck, it is my wish to see you guys out on top again.

I am very sorry to see Ducati pulling out of the AMA. I am a Ducati owner and a huge racing fan. I specifically purchased a Ducati because of the numerous AMA races I attended. I always stopped at the Ferracci Fast by Ducati pit to check on the bikes and to get an autograph. One of my favorit memories is the conversation I had with Freddy Spencer when he was riding for Eraldo Ferracci. The AMA needs Ducati and I hope Ducati returns to the AMA in 2008.

I watched Ducati NA sales fall the last time Ducati stopped AMA racing and then rise again when Ducati came back to AMA racing. Aprilia realised too late how little MotoGP contributes to profitability and went bankrupt. I cannot comprehend the enormous sums of money spent on MotoGP without linkage to a small company like Ducati’s profits or sales. I hope that Ducati will eventually come back to race in AMA. I am excited to see that Ferracci might be fielding an MV Agusta AMA team next year.
