Presentazione Desmosedici RR / Desmosedici RR Unveiling

Thursday 01 June 2006 12:24:37 by Federico Minoli

Oggi, al Mugello, io, Claudio, Loris, Sete, Vittoriano e Alan (Jenkins), abbiamo presentato la Desmosedici RR.

Today at the Mugello racetrack Claudio, Loris, Sete, Vittoriano, Alan (Jenkins) and I unveiled the Desmosedici RR.
-English version below-

Even before being a commercial endeavour, this bike is a tribute to Ducati’s passion and persistance in pursuing our dream to

be always at the technological forefront. It is a great joy but also a huge responsibility, for me and our engineers too, to

be able to demonstrate in practice, on the road as well as on the track, that Ducati technology is a undeniable reality.

We are so proud to showcase all around the world this technology from Bologna, Italy.

We were so excited to watch the crowd of astonished faces and gaping Japanese journalists around our bike…

I will be staying in Mugello for the whole weekend: I hope my excitment will go on.

6. Posted Thursday 01 June 2006 at 13:55:31 by Carlo

She’s an astonishing beauty. I was speachless for at least 10 seconds, and that’s a lot for those who know me!
I agree with Koljen; replace the 999 (that’s why I drive a 998)

Fantastic!! This bike is everything it should be, a genuine MotoGP replica. I am so happy you made the brave choice to use the 4-cylinder as this is an amazing engine.

I hope this will be the next Ducati Superbike model, this would free the 2-cylinder testastretta to upgrade your supersport range.

27. Posted Thursday 01 June 2006 at 19:42:31 by MarcoS2R

29. Posted Thursday 01 June 2006 at 19:57:22 by Miguel

The bike is very beautiful, congratulations!. But, please, don’t make it to replace the xx9 series, I love the L-Twin engines and I see them a sign of identity of Ducati as the Desmo and the trellis frame.

30. Posted Thursday 01 June 2006 at 20:22:46 by asmaco

It’s an overwhelming achievement! The RR is a stylistic and technical icon. Although it is clearly out of my reach, I’m proud, that Ducati is capable and willing to build such a sophisticated machine. I will stick to my 749, because I think the twin suites my riding style better, and I hope, Ducati sees this as an aditional model, not as a replacement for the twins. But I hope You will produce enough to make the RR eligible for SBK, so You might use it for SBK competition, if the twins might be on the limit some day.

Kind regards,
Wolfgang from Germany

Ai, headlights like a kawasaki, a tail that does not have the 2 goodlooking jet exhausts. It’s a rush job. with a presentation that started to late(typical italian)The weight of the bike is not jet published so it’s to heavy to be a Racing Replica. After the never repeated but much copied twin lights of the 916 and the alien look of the 999 headlights, now we copie a wakakasi? No way, get a good italian designer to do it again!! and keep the weight under 140 kg road ready to pulverize anything allready on the road for less pecunia….

41. Posted Friday 02 June 2006 at 09:23:06 by davide

Bravo Ducati
I predict another sell-out all over the world, just watch! No other motorcycle company has the heart ( the balls!)- or the courage!Imagine a bike from Japan capable of 200hp?- It would have to be styled as a cruiser- weighing 300kgs.Honda US openly complains that racing has really done nothing for them-without, apparently, ever wondering as to why..
It would be sad -if it wasn’t so funny ! Thankyou Ducati for once again doing the so called impossible

62. Posted Sunday 04 June 2006 at 16:07:49 by Old Baldy

A nice, safe styling exercise, in my opinion. It’s OK, and a good representation of the MotoGP bike in looks, that’s true. For me, the Ducati MotoGP bike is not as striking and looks heavier and more bulky than all of the other MotoGP bikes - especially the sleek Kawasaki and the pretty Honda V5, so this styling base starts at a disadvantage, in my opinion. More importantly….no weight numbers published? My guess is that this bike will be no lighter, and possibly even heavier than a 999R? I guess I’m disappointed in that Ducati clearly has taken the conservative styling and design and engineering route. I’d hoped for Ducati to take a different direction from the mainstream superbike manufacturers - and go for something a lot more radical in terms of mass control, traction control and styling - something that will give Ducati that absolutely required performance edge on the road as well as the track. 200HP is amazing, but less than 9% more than an R1 Yamaha, both claimed at the crank, and it likely weighs more than any of the top Japanese superbikes. I would guess that Honda may well come out with a road V5 clone with better performance and nice styling too with good materials and fit and finish and cheaper servicing and at a considerable price advantage- and then where does that leave the D16RR?
I was hoping for more emphasis from Ducati on weight reduction (not even really mentioned) and engineering that sets Ducati apart from the Japanese crowd.
Anyway….nice bike, and a very safe style, but maybe not the absolute stunner in engineering and design that I was looking for. I’m sure it will be a success for Ducati - I hope so. Now, if we can get that Hypermotard to lose that heavy single-sided swingarm and a few extra pounds, THAT would be my next choice!

The V4 moto is a real ducati again! No more that absurd belt gear drive!! The first Ducati since my MHR900 from 1984 which is a harassment for all my money.
Pure italian design of its best. Ducati I forgive you now, for all that ugly Piere Nonblanc designs of the last 5 years. ciao

Desmosaluti a tutti

71. Posted Monday 05 June 2006 at 13:36:49 by Stuart Moerdyk

What A bike. I must dissagree with Old Baldy as in my opinion, Ducati have never conformed to the mainstream superbike design. This Desomsedici is awesome!People don’t buy Ducati for performance (despite the success of WSB and MotoGP we all know how different those bikes are to what we can buy from the local Ducati dealer, if want performance buy a jap bike. Ducati is about tradition and emotion. They cost more than the jap bikes and generally do not perform in standard/stock mode on the same level as the jap bikes. Look at World Supersport and Superstock for evidence of this. The problem is if you want to remain cool, you need to continuously change your jap bike to stay up to date with the latest model. However, buy a Ducati and you don’t have the same pressure to upgrade all the time. Look how long the 916 design remained the latest offering. With Jap bikes you have three years at best. After that you’ve got an old model. Albeit that I am in the minority, I was never inspired to buy a Ducati on the strength of the 916 design. However, the 999/749 style had me bolt upright and taking notice. Now were talking a thing of beauty and definatley not conforming to the maindtream superbike design of the Japanese manufactures. And now the Desmosedici RR. Nothing like it on the market. Pure Ducati no two ways about it. I love it and if I could afford it it would be in my garage. One thing though. How are Ducati planning on getting around the fact that the Desmo RR becomes a production bike and as such the technology cannot be shared with the prototype of the MOTOGP racing version. We saw what happened to WCM when they apparantly used the Yamaha R1 engine - they suffered a ban. How are Ducati going to negotiate this. As great as it might be to have a proper MotoGP rep, there are consequesnces to the racing version??

Complimenti DUCATI!!!!!

73. Posted Tuesday 06 June 2006 at 20:24:41 by Greg

I sit stunned. Having read more than one blog regarding the 999s place in the world of “Superbikes” I cannot help but state that there are many who do not “Get It”. My 05 999r is as fierce and pleasureable as anything I`ve ever experienced driving/piloting while my 05 999 BiPo is powerful and yet docile in its street duties. Replace the 999? What would the competition look up too? In regards to the Desmo I can only say we vote with our pocketbooks. My Desmo reservation has been placed. Never look back.

74. Posted Wednesday 07 June 2006 at 07:18:49 by Stuart

I agree with Greg. Why take the 999 out of the Ducati offereing at all. OK so there are some that say the best was the 999’s predecessor the 916 to 998 styling. style..Great, but there are also many who say the 999 has earned it’s rightful place in the Ducati paddock and deserves to stay. We must remember that the 998 style was never up against the 1000cc in-line fours, but rather Aprillia 1000cc and 750cc in lne fours. However, the Desmo in WSBK could be very interesting. I think the problem Ducati is having is the amount of money it is taking to make the 999 competitive in WSBK, I’d imagine this was in part due to the twin cylinder config, not the 999 specifically. I think the 998 would suffer the same fate? This is why Ducati alledgedly is pushing for increase in cc to 1200.I must say though that it would be a very sad day when Ducati move on from the legendary twin superbikes.

75. Posted Wednesday 07 June 2006 at 11:17:48 by Nicola Rossi

La Desmosedici RR è una cosa incredibile! E’ bellissima complimenti.

76. Posted Friday 09 June 2006 at 21:51:07 by Jakub

Hey Stuart Moerdyk! You keep comparing Ducati to jap bikes. Well, I have a 749, brand new, not even 200k and guess what - it broke and it will take over a month to fix it. Same with gear, it takes forever. When comparing, please look also how Ducati is unable to compete on service. The company differentiates itself by charging a premium price for a premium brand. However, a premium product requires premium service, a basic concept of differentiation. Ducati does not offer any, just constant delays, that’s all. Think about it.

Jakub, you’ll get no argument from me on that! A couple of years ago I wanted the 749 too and on aproaching all the dealers in South Africa, none were availbale off the floor and in addition to paying hugely inflated prices for the bike over what you guys in the States or the Europeans would pay, a 50% deposit and an additional R6000 was required to get the bike in two weeks. Ducati has recognised these and the numerous other faults (in SA at least this is plain to see). The problem that Ducati will continue to face is exactly the thing that makes the bikes so desirable. Unlike Yamaha, Honda etc who have huge ranges of products that apeal very broadly and so generate the income to mass produce very high spec machinery, Ducati don’t. Essentiall the range is small and so their appeal will be very specific to a narrow band of consumers. As such, to generate the income to put together the high spec will be more difficult and so there will always be areas their brand to be found lacking. This is not neccesarily becasue there is negligence but rather a lack of funds to aportion the right focus. The introduction of the new motard as well as the Multi-strada really appear to me to be an efort by Ducarti to broaden their market without loosing the sense of exclusivity their customers have grown to enjoy. The Desmosedici seems to be another step in the same direction to widen the scope of products (they’ve suggested the Desmo is not a replacement for the Testastretta. As I don’t work for Ducati (unfortunately) this is all my interpretation which may be completely wrong, but look at MV Agusta and Benelli for proof. I must say though that I agree that it would be great if Ducati would put together a plan to address the lack of service (I can’t imagine they haven’t yet) especially for the US which must be their biggest market by a mile. Ducti changed hands last year and the improvement has been immense to say the least, well done to Ashley and the team, but at this stage though, the 749 is still not available off the floor!

Thanks a lot for having decided to produce this amazing wonder !

I am the very happy owner of a ‘2002 998 S - see http://www.desmoteam.com - and I ordered a Desmosedici RR this week : after a whole week-end of deep thoughts and long nights almost without sleep, my conclusion was : “Carpe Diem !”.

Quite 2 years before touching it, riding it, feeling it, it will be a very long time to wait… hopefully I have my wonderful 998 S !

Well, what can I say, it is trully a fantastic bike. Now, I would have some comments on what concerns racing this bike. First of all, there are advantages and disadvantages. It is known that the 999R can beat the Yamaha R1 on some tracks due to better handling and this handling is partially due to the twin engine. Howevere, it must be taken into consideration that the power of the 999R cannot be upgraded to more that 195 bhp thus the gap of power between the japanese and the 999 is HUGE. A bike like the D16RR could face the Jap competition but a unknown variable is that of the handling of the D16RR which is kind of brutal on the track. It would be really nice to have a street 200bhp bike on the track which could theoretically be upgraded in both power and handling! So, seeing this bike on WSBK tracks is a dream but let us let Ducati decide. It would really propel the Ducati to more and certain vicories.

My Ducati Desmosedici RR, delivered April 2008, has now 11000 km on the tacho. I bt it has the highest mileag of all the Desmosedici RR on Earth :-)

After having made last autumn a 5000 km TouRR de France in 2 weeks with only a backpack - see http://tourrdefrance.blogspot.com - I can truly affirm that this amazing bike is the best sportsbike ever produced. Thank you all for having made this dream a reality!
